Motorola Walkie Talkie

Paul V. Galvin and Edward Stewart established a small storage battery company in Chicago Illinois around nineteen twenty one. Unfortunately the government closed it down do the company owing back taxes. This did not stop the men from opening another storage battery store in nineteen twenty six. When the electric powered batteries hit the market sales went through the roof.  Mr. Steward made a battery eliminator; a converter that would let a battery operated radio to be plugged into a wall outlet. Again faced with bankruptcy, he turned everything into a company called Galvin manufacturing Corporation.

The name Motorola is the combination of the words ‘motor’ and Victrola.’ The firm new World War two was coming, he oversaw the development of the police cruiser radio.

In June of nineteen thirty Galvin Manufacturing Corporation initiated the Motorola brand of car radio. It was a huge success and was actually intended for the general public to put into their cars. But the Chicago police and city government ordered the radios for their public safety use. In the late nineteen thirties radios made by Motorola went in the publics’ homes and small businesses. BF Goodrich Company then became Motorola’s dealer and the sales went through the roof.

In nineteen forty seven, Galvin Manufacturing implemented the name Motorola and ended up purchasing many small companies.  Shortly thereafter, Motorola came out with the ‘handie-talkie’ used by the United States military. Being handheld, the military could use it to communicate with another person.

Motorola walkie talkie is a hand held, portable, bi-directional radio transceiver. The uniqueness is a half duplex channel and a push to talk switch that will start the transmission. The first Motorola walkie talkie looked like a telephone handset, somewhat. It was probably a bit larger but it was still a single unit. It had an antenna from the top.
